In addition to this however it’s also a good idea to know some of the tell tale signs of a roof in distress. To help you keep atop of your own roof repair therefore, we’ve put together a list of the most common symptoms:
Storm Damage!
A quick note that storms – particularly high winds – are the most likely things to damage your roof. It is therefore wise to look for the below signs immediately after a storm or high winds and call us in straight away for a consultation if you notice any of them.
Shingle Damage
The shingles are the tiles that comprise the majority of roofs in the US. As they bear the brunt of all of the damaging effects of the various weather systems through the year, they can be susceptible to damage. I mean, think about it – they are out there all year round in everything from pouring rain to baking sunshine to everything in between – including snow and ice. Frankly, it’s a miracle they are as tough as they are or they would need replacing far more often.
Tell tale signs that the shingle is failing are if they are cracked, have started to curl along edges or in the corners or if they look like they are dented (or collapsing into the middle of themselves). Another tell tale sign of shingle damage is if of course if they are actually just flat out missing!
Spotting these signs early and calling us in is likely to result in just the affected shingles being repaired or replaced, helping to keep repair costs down.
Sagging
Across a roof, different sections can often be installed at different pitches – by this we mean the angle at which the roof is built. However, the lines (i.e. the edges) of the roof should all be pretty uniformly straight.
If this is not the case however, then it means that your roof is sagging. It should be easy to spot this by looking at the edge of the roof against the sky behind it, and if the middle is bowed or dipping inwards then sagging is occurring.
A healthy, well maintained roof would not sag, so this is a red flag that more serious problems are at play. Call us in at the first sign of sagging so we can assess – and repair – the underlying cause.
Damp Patches and Algae Growth
Finally, an excellent method to check on the health of your roof is to walk across the street and take a good look up at it. If your neighbors ask why you are starring at your own house, you can explain that you’re simply saving yourself a load of money!
When you look at your roof, if you notice a lot of dark patches on your shingles, this could be damp. In addition to this you may also see some instances of algae or moss growing on your roof. As these organisms thrive in damp conditions, this again is a warning sign of a potentially serious problem and should be investigated quickly.
Keep an eye for these signs and, along with regular maintenance and inspection, you can have a long lasting roof that will give you years of trouble free service.
